What is chlorine?

Chemical element, symbol Cl, with atomic number 17 and atomic weight 35.453. Chlorine exists as a yellow-green gas at ordinary temperatures and pressures. Chlorine is one of the four closely related chemical elements that have been called halogens.

It is widely used in water treatment due to its high efficacy against bacteria, algae, mold, fungi and microorganisms dangerous to human health. In addition, it is a bleaching agent. Its appearance is grainy, light beige in color. In aqueous solution it gives off an odor similar to that of sodium hypochlorite. The molecular weight of calcium hypochlorite is 142.98 g / mol.

Given its high antiseptic power, it is used as a disinfecting agent for swimming pool water, mainly in concentrations of 70% .1 For this reason, it is commonly called chlorine for swimming pools.

Chlorine is an efficient and economical disinfectant for the treatment and purification of water, as well as a gas dissolving it in water or sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite or derivatives of chloroisocyanutate.

Pools are disinfected using various chlorine-based compounds, including chlorine gas, sodium hypochlorite (liquid bleach), calcium hypochlorite, lithium hypochlorite, and chlorinated isocyanurates.

To achieve optimal disinfection in our pools, it would be convenient to dilute, approximately every five days, about 20 grams of chlorine for every 15 m3 of water

How to apply it? In general, it is recommended that the initial dose of chlorine is proportional to 200 grams per 25,000 liters of water, if we use tablets. We will have to apply this dose approximately every ten days; about when the first pill is half used.

In short, the values of chlorine and pH levels in swimming pools must be between 0.6 and 1 ppm in the case of chlorine, and between 7 and 7.5 in the case of pH.

Generalized irritation. Being in contact with chlorine for a long time can cause itching, burning, hives and redness of the skin. In the case of swimming pools, diving in and not washing your face after going out can cause irritation to the eyes and nose.

Chlorine is commonly used to kill bacteria in swimming pools and to make water drinkable for human consumption, as it has been proven to be quite effective in fighting bacteria such as E. coli. It is also used in household disinfectants and to whiten clothes.
